Hi friends,
I’m still trying to find the right words.
Last week, I was honored—and totally surprised—to receive The Order of the Long Leaf Pine by our impressive Governor, Josh Stein. I’m incredibly grateful, and I’ve been reflecting on what it really means.
To be honest, it feels surreal. While this recognition has my name on it, it isn’t mine. It belongs to all of us. It belongs to the team at A Place at the Table who pour their hearts into this work every day. To the volunteers who give their time and energy so generously. To our diners, donors, and board who show up with love and a strong belief in our mission every day. To the original founding team who helped build this dream. To every person who’s helped create this community of belonging.
At the same time, the world feels so heavy right now. I am writing this at 5 AM wide awake, anxious as can be. So much in the news has been heartbreaking, and I know I’m not the only one feeling it deep in my body. There’s so much injustice, so much pain, so much uncertainty.
And yet—through this recognition, I am reminded and inspired by something important: We must keep going. We must keep showing up. We must keep choosing love, community, and hope, even when it’s hard. Especially when it’s hard. Doing so is a gift.
Because that’s what this work is really about. It isn’t about awards or affirmation. It’s about community. Inspiring stories. Shared meals. Making sure everyone knows they belong and are worthy of dignity and many many hugs.
So today, I am getting up and heading in to Table with the honor of this award, the grief of what’s happening in the world, and the deep belief that what we’re building together at A Place at the Table matters.
Thank you for being part of this community. Thank you for believing in this mission. Thank you for continuing to show up. Let’s keep going, together.
I will be at 300 W. Hargett Street, with the most special staff, volunteers and community if you need anything.
So much gratitude,
Maggie
