Y’all, I got the best email this week, and I just have to share:
“Maggie — I handed out one of your PLACE cards this week to a very grateful recipient who told me that he never feels invisible when he goes to A Place at the Table…”
Those words get right at the heart of our mission–your mission!–and it was sunshine for my soul at a time when everything around me just feels so…messy.
I don’t know about you, but for me, the recent weeks have been a struggle. Everything feels heavy–from school and local shootings to daily Iranian killings, to political chaos, hurricanes, and Ukrainian war, it’s just…a lot.
Let’s also not forget that holidays can be hard. It’s ‘supposed’ to be a time when we gather with friends and family, a time when we celebrate each other and our traditions. But of course, the reality is that holidays aren’t celebratory for everyone.
For some, the holidays are lonely–a time to feel invisible. For some, they’re messy–a time when everything is too visible. For some, this time of year means navigating both those situations at once.
I can’t tell you when the world will stop feeling bananas. But I can tell you that at Table we’ll make sure you feel a little less invisible. And on Thanksgiving day, we’ll make sure you’ve got all the breakfast tacos, hot chocolate, and hugs you could want.
The Gonza Food Truck will be at Table from 8am-10am on Thanksgiving morning and we’d love to see you there. Pop by for 10 minutes or stay the two hours, but just know you have a place at the Gonza Table. Always.
Many of you have asked how you can help this holiday season. Here are two ways:
- Become a sustainer. We’re looking for new Table neighbors to support our community each month. Join us in giving $5, $20, or whatever is meaningful to you, and then pop by for a free cinnamon roll on us. YUM!
- Eat some goodies! Looking for pies or cookies for your holiday gatherings? Our awesome team has you covered here: It’s Pie and Pastry SEASON!
Thankful doesn’t begin to do justice to the way I feel about all of you. We could not do this work without you and we certainly wouldn’t want to.
With gratitude,
Maggie
BIG NEWS:
We’ve had the pure fortune and joy to work alongside the incredible Sophia Woo over the past year. An avid volunteer over the years, an asset on the Board of Directors, and our current Director of Operations and Finance, Sophia was and will always be a major part of our team. We already miss her and can’t wait to see what she does next.
BUT drum roll please…
We are so excited to have the rockstar Chef Andrew become our Director of Operations starting next week!! Andrew is not only the kindest friend & human you’ll meet, but one of the most compassionate leaders. He cares deeply about this community and is excited to take this role on.
Pop by to say hey to Andrew and the rest of the team soon!
